Apple is taking on Facebook events with a new Apple Invites app that lets users organize themselves for events.

The app is free on the App Store and will run on all iPhones with iOS 18. Only people with an iCloud+ subscription can create events. If you don’t have an iPhone, you can also access these events at iCloud.com. Android users can also access these digital invitations via the web.

Taking a step back, this seems like a very straightforward app that makes it extremely simple to drop in some event info, photos and a guest list. Then, on the guest side, it’s easy to RSVP. I like what Apple has done here and this makes sense as an iOS feature, but I worry that it will have a hard time catching on over dominant event organization systems like Facebook groups and standard calendar invitations.

Apple also automatically adds in Maps and Weather to make sure all the guests know where to go and what the temperature is supposed to be like when they get there. If someone posts something in the group, it will also notify the other members to keep everyone up to date.
