Yesterday, it was announced that an app called Hot Tub was available in the E.U., which was the first porn app available on iOS. This was due to the E.U. mandating Apple to allow third-party app stores on its devices in 2024.
In a statement to MobileSyrup, Apple said:
“We are deeply concerned about the safety risks that hardcore porn apps of this type create for EU users, especially kids. This app and others like it will undermine consumer trust and confidence in our ecosystem that we have worked for more than a decade to make the best in the world. Contrary to the false statements made by the marketplace developer, we certainly do not approve of this app and would never offer it in our App Store. The truth is that we are required by the European Commission to allow it to be distributed by marketplace operators like AltStore and Epic who may not share our concerns for user safety.”
It seems like Apple’s main concern is that Hot Tub is being marketed online as “the first Apple-approved porn app,” which isn’t true. The tech giant does technically allow the app on devices in the E.U., but it did not arrive for its own App Store.
In a post on Threads, AltStore creator Riley Testut posted a screenshot of Hot Tub being approved by Apple for distribution. So, technically, it does have Apple approval, but overall, it’s a little murky.
Overall, I’m a fan of the E.U. regulations since it pushed Apple to allow emulators on iPad and iOS, which has been a ton of fun, but as more fringe apps like Hot Tub hit the stores, it’s likely going to continue to cause controversy. Especially since most regular apps can already be on the App Store, a majority of the apps vying to be on the AltStore are things not allowed on the App Store.
