After this morning’s 16e reveal, Apple shook up its Canadian storefront
While the spotlight has been on the iPhone 16e all day, Apple has quietly stopped selling the iPhone SE and 14 from 2022. Both of these phones were priced below the new iPhone 16e, so dropping them from the product line raises the iPhone’s price floor in Canada considerably.
For years, Apple kept a few older versions of the iPhone on store shelves as a discounted way to get an iPhone. Then, in 2016, the iPhone SE launched to add a new low-cost ($579) device to the bottom end of Apple’s mobile phones. This meant Apple would sell, on average, five phones across various price points. Over time, the older iPhones have crept up in price from $679 to $849, but the SE always kept the price floor at $579.
Now, with the 16e, it appears that Apple is resetting its lineup and raising the price floor to $899 in Canada. There’s little doubt that the iPhone 16e is going to be significantly better than the iPhone 14 and SE from 2022, but it does suggest that to get a cheap iPhone in 2025 you’ll need to buy it used. It will also be interesting to see if another ‘e’ version of a phone comes out next year or if the older versions are kept around for years, like the SE was.
With the removal of the iPhone SE and 14 from the product line, it also gets rid of Apple’s Lightning connector so now all the products Apple sells charge via USB-C.
