AT&T’s free iPhone 16 Pro deal is its most compelling trade-in offer yet. How to qualify

Kerry Wan/ZDNETAT&T’s latest iPhone trade-in promotion just made it much easier for existing iPhone users to upgrade to the latest models. For a limited time, the carrier will deduct up to $1,000 off an iPhone 16 model — whether that be the smaller variant or the Max — when customers trade in an iPhone 13 Pro (or later) in any condition. Qualification includes devices that are cracked, have swollen batteries, or have simply seen better days.

If you’re more interested in the non-Pro iPhone 16 or have an older iPhone to trade in, AT&T will still deduct up to $830 when you submit an iPhone 12 or higher in any condition. While the offer doesn’t include the iPhone 16 Plus, you still have a total of three models to consider if it’s time for an upgrade.

If you’re skeptical about this “free iPhone” deal, I get it. Such promotions are almost always too good to be true. But if you happen to meet the qualifications, are looking to move on from your current iPhone, and don’t mind staying on the AT&T network for three more years, then this deal is more than reasonable.

Besides the trade-in qualification, you’ll have to agree to receive your money back via 36 monthly bill credits and be on an eligible unlimited data plan, which excludes Value Plus, Value Plus VL, and Value Plus Unlimited plans. The best way to understand if you qualify is by seeing what upgrade options you have on your AT&T account online or by visiting a local store.

If you meet the requirements, you’ll be required to trade in your older iPhone after you receive the new one. That way, you’ll have time to transfer your data over and convert your phone number into an eSIM (if needed). To help you decide which new iPhone is best for you, here are the key differences between the three options AT&T is offering with the new trade-in deal:

iPhone 16: Most standard iPhone 16 experience, with a 6.1-inch display and a slew of bold colorwaysiPhone 16 Pro: Similar feature set as the Pro Max but with a smaller form factor and battery sizeiPhone 16 Pro Max: The largest display and battery on an iPhone, with all the fix-ins, including Camera Control Deals are subject to sell out or expire at any time, though ZDNET remains committed to finding, sharing, and updating the best product deals for you to score the best savings.
