Koodo Mobile and Virgin Plus have brought back their respective Lunar New Year bonus data deals, following after Fido.

Both Koodo and Virgin offer $45/50GB and $55/75GB 4G plans, but now those plans include 8GB of extra monthly data, bumping them up to 58GB and 83GB, respectively.

Update Feb. 5, 2025 at 9:25am ET: Koodo has added February 6th as the end date for its Lunar New Year data bonuses. At the time of this update, Fido and Virgin Plus did not list end dates. However, these providers tend to copy each other, so I’d expect them both to remove their data bonuses shortly after Koodo.

Koodo’s prices include a $5/mo autopay discount, but Virgin doesn’t offer an autopay discount. Koodo’s plans include 4G data capped at speeds of up to 100Mbps, unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting plus one free perk, with options like rollover data or premium voicemail. Virgin’s plans, on the other hand, include 4G data with speeds capped at up to 150Mbps, along with unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting and unlimited international texting. Both providers offer standard plan benefits like call display and voicemail.

It’s worth noting that both Koodo and Virgin previously offered 8GB of bonus data for Lunar New Year but briefly removed the bonus data last week after raising prices. Rogers-owned Fido was the first to bring back its bonus data offer, and now Telus’ Koodo and Bell’s Virgin have done the same.

Moreover, Fido’s bonus data offers are slightly different. Fido has a $45/60GB plan, which is slightly better than what Koodo and Virgin have, but Fido’s $55/80GB plan is slightly worse.

That said, none of the Big Three flanker brands have particularly good deals. Freedom Mobile, for example, has a $39/60GB plan with 5G+ data and unlimited usage in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. Similarly, Public Mobile has a $39/60GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico plan. Personally, I’d rather pay less for faster data and better roaming, but to each their own.
