The company is still claiming to be unfairly targeted

After being hit with a lawsuit over alleged false advertising on December 23, Rogers has filed a response to the allegations stating that it’s being unreasonably targeted for advertising in the same way as the other carriers.
The response also states that the bureau is ignoring the many disclosures on Rogers’ website and in its stores and the widespread customer understanding of how modern data plans work. Thus, the company implies that the lawsuit against it is built on a highly selective collection of advertisements.
“The Bureau attacks not only Rogers’ advertising but the industry’s entire approach to unlimited wireless data plans,” said Rogers in its filings. These types of semi-unlimited plans have been on offer from a vast majority of carriers in Canada for years helping to replace costly overage fees.
To finish off its rebuttal against the bureau, Rogers also stated that data buckets have expanded in recent years meaning very few of its subscribers actually hit their limits and have to deal with throttled unlimited network speeds. It should also be noted that Rogers throttles data to the same speeds as Bell and Telus.
Rogers launched its semi-unlimited plan type in 2019, leading all the other big Canadian carriers to follow suit with similar options over the next few months. Then, in late 2023, the Competition Bureau announced that it was probing Rogers, which resulted in the allegations and the lawsuit that dropped on December 23, 2024.
