The company says it’s a fraction of a percent of its workforce
A new report from the Canadian Press says that Shopify has laid off a “fraction of a percent” of its workforce. The numbers are unclear, but the report mentions that since Shopify has around 8,000 employees, this could mean 80-ish people were let go.
A spokesperson for the company told the Canadian Press that the layoffs are in the organizational layer and do not affect merchant value at the end of the day. The cuts are aimed at keeping Shopify fast, sharp and focused on long-term merchant success.
This all comes after a mandate at the company this spring that pushed employees to try AI before asking for new hires to come in. It’s unclear how many new hires have come into the company since that mandate came into effect.
This round of layoffs, while small, follows the hundreds of people who were let go in 2024.
